What’s one thing you want to tell a person you love?

Reset — Dec. 28, 2023 — A note from Emily

In my five years of freelancing, I’ve come to understand a simple and lovely truth: I am much less of an independent contractor, and much more of an interdependent contractor.

I know, so dorky! But it’s the best way to describe the fact that striking out on my own has revealed to me just how important my community is. From referrals keeping business humming to mentors taking me under their wing not because I’m a direct report but because they genuinely want to help, this chapter of my career has shown me how true today’s quote is — being free (or freelance!) IS achieved through being connected.

And that connection can counter the isolation that makes it so hard to mobilize for the change we want.

This one’s quick…but kind of profound.

Think about someone you love but haven’t talked to in a while. It could be a childhood friend, your cool aunt, your former coworker — up to you!

Now send that person a text (or if you’re braver than most millennials, give them a call) just to say hi. Let them know they matter to you — because they really, really do.
