How can we spend our dollars to demand a better world?
Reimagine — December 30, 2023
Oh crap…are we wiping our butts with old growth forests?
That was our reaction when we learned about the “tree to toilet pipeline” that’s literally flushing our magical, carbon-sequestering forests down the pipes thanks to the sh*tty practices of big-name TP brands.
Luckily, we live in an age of easy swaps.
Our friend Monica Dean let us in on exactly how to make the swaps that give us the biggest bang for our buck. Monica knows her stuff, from helping shape massively influential reports with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to advising Secretary John Kerry in his role as Special Presidential Envoy for Climate.
We asked what she tells friends who ask her what they can do — and her answer was all about simple swaps we can make in our daily lives. It’s not about shrinking your personal carbon footprint (that’s a big oil PR thing) but about shrinking the market for the stuff driving climate change.
Demand a better toilet paper — one that’s not wrapped in plastic and made from virgin trees. We like Who Gives a Crap: it’s made from 100% bamboo, plastic free, and they’ll even deliver it to your house.
“You were going to buy toilet paper anyway,” Monica says. “So why not buy this other version of the same product? Those simple swaps really add up.”
